Greek Alphabet - memorization and pronunciation
As requested at the Monday October 27th 2008 Delta Rho chapter meeting, please find below the Greek alphabet.

For easier memorization, I have structured the alphabet into a poem-like pattern and only include the capital letters.  Memorize the first line, and then build on the memorized first line by stating the first line and memorizing the second line.  Continue building your memorization by memorizing one new line at a time until all is memorized.  It also helps to write out the characters as you learn each line.  You will notice the alphabet is like a poem, with a certain cadence and some rhymes.  Writing the letters in the same pattern on a business card and carrying it around can also help.
Note the following pronunciations (the dictionary has more than one pronunciation for some letters.  I list here the pronunciation used in my experience):
  • Epsilon: 'Ep' as in 'epic', 'si' as in 'sister', 'lon' as in 'lawn'
  • Zeta, Eta, Theta:  all have the same 'eta' pronunciation, which is pronounced like 'ate uh'.
  • Xi: 'X' has 'z' sound.  Say like 'zie', rhymes with pie.
  • Rho: say like 'row' as in 'row row row your boat'.
  • Chi: 'Ch' has the 'K' sound.  Say like 'kie', rhymes with pie.
  • Psi: silent 'P', so pronounce like 'sigh'.
  • Upsilon: I say 'up'silon, some say 'yoop'silon.  'silon' part is the same as in Epsilon, above.
  • Phi: 'Ph' has the 'F' sound.  Say like 'fie', rhymes with pie.
  • I think the other letters are self explanatory.  If not, check a dictionary.
If the table pattern here is messed up by the web page formatting, then obtain the Greek capital letters from http://wikipedia.com and arranged the letters so you have the following pattern:
  • The first 5 letters on the first line
  • The next 3 letters on the second line
  • The next 5 letters on the third line
  • The next 3 letters on the fourth line
  • The next 5 letters on the fifth line
  • The final 3 letters on the sixth line
